In the artist's words
Chromatic Layers is a body of work that focuses on identity, specifically my struggle to live with and accept having ADHD.
The process of being an artist is much harder than it looks and the struggle (for me) is mostly internal. In all honesty, this piece gave me hell. I started painting it, felt really good about it, and then something within me tanked. I started removing pieces and adding new ones, then removing the new ones. I left the studio one night, frustrated, and told myself I'd look at the piece with fresh eyes the next day.
Upon arrival, the piece looked much better than it had the night before. I added a few small details – a line here, a circle there, and decided to call it finished.
"Your Harshest Critic" is about the space inside that tells you something is not good enough. That critic can be very loud for me at times. Through therapy and continued education around ADHD, I'm learning to listen to my intuition over my inner critic.
