About the TRAINS series

All my life, I have been fascinated by trains. They are big, loud, and a bit scary when they are moving fast. As a kid, my grandparents would take me to the Metra station, which is just a few minutes from their home. We’d watch the Rock Island trains come in, filled with busy commuters. Sometimes, we’d get on the train and ride it to the end of the line at Joliet or Chicago. My favorite times were when we ended in Chicago.

Last year, my husband took me to the Illinois Railway Museum on a whim. We stayed for hours because I was enamored with the trains, especially the vibrant, beautiful colors that decorated once ordinary streetcars and locomotives. I took picture after picture, hoping to capture the energy of these massive machines that were now permanently parked in barns or on outdoor tracks. My photos didn’t do these beauties justice, but I was so inspired that I decided to make an entire series of paintings loosely based onthe trains I saw that day.
